The Ottawa Senators defeated the Washington Capitals 6-5 in an Eastern Conference battle.
The Senators raced into a 3-1 first-period lead through goals from Jason Spezza, Milan Michalek and Daniel Alfredsson, and although Washington pulled level, the hosts prevailed.
Chris Phillips and Alexei Kovalev netted in the final period to clinch victory.
Western Conference leaders the San Jose Sharks secured a 3-2 shootout triumph at the Detroit Red Wings, with Patrick Marleau netting the decisive strike.
Elsewhere, the Buffalo Sabres suffered a 4-3 loss to Carolina, with Brandon Sutter, Ray Whitney, Stephane Yelle and Sergei Samsonov netting for the Hurricanes.
Alexandre Burrows, Jannik Hansen and Ryan Kesler were on target as the Vancouver Canucks eased to a 3-0 win at the Florida Panthers.
The Boston Bruins scored five unanswered goals - including four in the first period - to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-4.
Mike Ribeiro netted twice as the Dallas Stars came from behind to claim a 3-1 win over the Calgary Flames and the Edmonton Oilers beat the Los Angeles Kings 3-2, with Lubomir Visnovsky scoring the winner after a shootout featuring 20 attempts.
