Nani Not For Sale

The Portuguese winger has admitted his frustration at being unable to hold down a regular first-team spot this term. Following the exit of Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer, Nani was seen as the heir apparent - but that has not transpired.
The likes of AC Milan and Benfica are both said to be keen on the 23-year-old but Ferguson is adamant he will not be selling. "Some big clubs have been mentioned for Nani, like Milan and Benfica, but there has been no contact made with us - and we wouldn't entertain selling him anyway," Ferguson is quoted by the Sunday Mirror.
"He is only 23. If someone came in for Nani in January we would tell him that he is going absolutely nowhere. "He's a young boy and he wants to play - and he might get a chance against Spurs in the Carling Cup this week. "He has suffered because (Luis Antonio) Valencia's form has been excellent and because (Gabriel) Obertan has emerged as an interesting player. "It is no criticism of Nani, but the way things have developed in the last few weeks have gone against him.

Its Not Crisis In Dubai

Market experts say the debt revelations from Dubai this week will not lead the global economy back into recession, but have seriously damaged the Emirate's standing as a leading financial hub. The Dubai government caught investors off-guard late Wednesday by announcing it was asking creditors for a six-month moratorium on the debt repayments of Dubai World and Nakheel, one of its biggest holding companies and its real estate arm.
The U.S. stock market opened lower on Friday as traders seized their first chance to respond to the news after the Thanksgiving holiday. Read more about the market reaction The Dow closed 153 points down while Nasdaq and the S&P lost 1.7 percent, although although light trading -- markets were only open half-a-day due to the holidays -- exaggerated any volatility in markets.
European markets closed higher after recouping earlier losses. Earlier, Asian markets fell amid worries about the impact of Dubai's debt problems elsewhere.
"It's so easy to jump onto the gloom and doom bandwagon over this," Stephen Pope, Chief Global Equity Strategist at Cantor Fitzgerald told CNN.Video: Analysis: Dubai debt 'hiccup' Video: Dubai debt fears Video: Investors scared by Dubai debt
"It might slow the pace of recovery for a while but I don't think it's going to be one of these cataclysmic moments that suddenly means equities fall of a cliff and means that the economy turns south once more," he said.
In a note to clients, Howard Wheeldon, senior strategist at BGC Partners, said the fallout from Dubai World's debt problems should be measured in days, not weeks.

Nadal In Bad Shape

The world number two, who lost 6-4 6-4 to Robin Soderling in his first round-robin match, was simply blown away by the Russian in the opening set and a second-set recovery ended with defeat in a superb tie-break. The scoreline means the Spaniard can no longer qualify for the semi-finals, with Davydenko and Novak Djokovic vying for the second spot alongside Soderling, who sealed his passage today with victory over Djokovic. Davydenko has a decent record against Nadal, having beaten him three times in their previous seven matches, most recently in the final of the Shanghai Masters last month.
And he began superbly, setting up a break point in the second game with a backhand winner then taking his opportunity when a lengthy rally ended with Nadal finding the top of the net. The Spaniard, unusually, did not even attempt to chase down a number of balls and his record in the competition slumped to three sets lost and none won after less than half an hour as Davydenko secured a second break to love before easily serving it out. Nadal looked a shadow of the player who dominated the first five months of the season and he was immediately in trouble at the start of the second set.
The world number two saved the break point thanks to a big serve and went on to hold but Davydenko must have been scarcely able to believe how many half-court balls his opponent was presenting him with. The near-capacity crowd was also stunned, every Nadal error greeted by a collective intake of breath. The Russian really was playing well, though, the accuracy of his groundstrokes sending Nadal - who appeared to be struggling with his movement, particularly on the backhand side - scrambling across his baseline.
The Majorcan doggedly hung on in the third game but the pressure finally told two games later, Davydenko taking his third break point to move into a 3-2 lead. The seventh seed then gave Nadal an unexpected lifeline as he slipped to 15-40 but the 23-year-old could not take advantage. Nadal has reached the semi-finals on both his previous appearances at the end-of-season tournament and he at last began to take the fight to his opponent, pumping his fist in celebration as a Davydenko backhand dropped long on break point. A three-game winning streak for Nadal took him to 5-4 but the Russian stopped the rot and another feeble game from the Australian Open champion left Davydenko serving for the match.
An engrossing second set had another surprise in store, though, as a series of vintage Nadal shots allowed him to break back again. A tie-break of phenomenal quality ensued, with rallies full of punishing exchanges, but it was Davydenko, deservedly, who came through thanks to the last of many winners.

Sad Exit For Liverpool

The versatile 30-year-old Brazilian defender, back from a calf injury, played in midfield in Tuesday's 1-0 victory in Budapest against Hungarian champions Debrecen. But the victory was in vain as Fiorentina's win over Lyon ensured Liverpool drop into the Europa League by finishing third in Group E.
"The players still have confidence and we know that it is only us who can change our situation by working hard to improve. "We know we can do better, certainly than we are doing at the moment. "The team are now intent on winning at Everton on Sunday and starting to get more points right to the end of the season. Then we will see what position we are in, and what we are able to fight for.
"It is a big game next against Everton and a big opportunity to improve and regain the strength we need for a long season ahead." Aurelio added: "It is difficult to explain how we feel. Being Liverpool, you expect to go much further in the competition than we have done this season. "But now we cannot allow ourselves to dwell on what has happened, we must concentrate on the future to fight for a different title, the Europa League.
"We also have the challenge to do things better in the Premier League as well. "It is difficult to know where this campaign has gone wrong, but against Lyon we lost goals in the last minutes of both games and that has made the difference. "Liverpool used to be more solid in defence, and we have only scored four goals in five games in the group matches, so we have to improve in all areas.
"We have been missing a lot of players through injury problems, so we have to think that things can only improve in that situation.
"It is a big disappointment to be out of the Champions League, but we have to win a trophy. A big team like Liverpool must accept that. "The Europa League is an opportunity to win a trophy and that's how we will go into this competition thinking. At Liverpool, every competition is important, we want to win trophies.
"We will have a great chance to get a trophy and we'll go for it, but there is still a long way go until May and we have to improve. "In the Premier League we know we have to do better and we have a massive game at the weekend at Everton.

Funny Groups Are Stil There

Some of Europe's biggest names on the brink of being evicted. While most attention on these shores has surrounded Liverpool's plight, other famous clubs are in just as much strife. Bayern Munich's position is no better than Liverpool's, last year's winners Barcelona are currently outside the two qualification slots, fellow La Liga side Atletico Madrid are already out, while neither AC Milan nor Real Madrid can rest easily just yet.
"The other groups are crazy," said Van der Sar. "It used to be the case that you always wanted to be first in your group but there are a couple this time where you know already that the runners-up would bring a difficult draw in February.
"The most important thing is to get the win tomorrow and see what happens later on."
United take on Besiktas at Old Trafford knowing a repeat of their win in Istanbul two months ago could secure their status as Group B winners, or at the very worst just a point away.
It is only what was expected from a side that has reached the semi-finals for three years on the trot, and the final in the last two years. But Van der Sar acknowledges what has gone before counts for nothing in a competition some, including Sir Alex Ferguson, feel is more intense than the World Cup. "It is not easy to get to the final," said the veteran Dutchman.
"There is a lot of quality around and we have lost some players, so just because you have reached two consecutive finals, it doesn't automatically mean you are going to get to a third. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication. "But what we are doing now is all building to what we hope will be a nice end to the season.
"You don't win things early in the season. You have a path to go along, starting with the group phase. "Everything is part of the big picture to win a trophy."

Babel Not Happy With His Less Number Of Appearence With Liverpool

The Holland international is unhappy with the limited number of matches he has started with the Anfield club since his £11.5million move from Ajax in the summer of 2007. Babel explained: "I have tried to talk to the manager but it isn't of any use. I couldn't really do anything with the feedback Benitez gave me.
"We have agreed to look at my situation in the winter. If there's no improvement then, I have to be honest, I want to be somewhere else.
"I don't play a lot so I can't be happy and I can't cheer out loud. Sometimes I wonder how long I can sustain it but I will fight for my position - what else can I do?" Babel scored an impressive long-range goal for Liverpool in their last Champions League match, the 1-1 draw at Lyon. However, on the eve of tonight's must-win match against Debrecen he spoke of his frustration at failing to make more of an impact with the club.
He continued in The Sun: "Isn't it unbelievable that in my first year I got chosen as Talent of the Year? And a season later I hardly play and without getting a proper chance." Babel, who represented Holland in Beijing last summer, added: "I don't know if it has anything to do with my little trip to the Olympics. I know the manager wanted me to stay." However, he does not think Benitez has a grudge against him.
Babel explained: "I really don't believe he is trying to get back at me. Every time me or my agent (Willie Haatrecht) have a chat with him he stresses I can't leave and he believes in me. We have to trust he is telling the truth. Saying it is different to showing it." Babel has confidence in his own ability and still believes he can make the right impression in a Liverpool shirt.

Federer Making Himself Strong

After Andy Murray's three-set win over Juan Martin del Potro this afternoon, the other two protagonists in Group A took to the court at the O2 Arena, where Federer defeated the Spaniard 4-6 7-5 6-1 in his opening match. Verdasco had not so much as taken a set off Federer, who has won the end-of-season event four times, in their three previous meetings but four points into the match the Spaniard was a break up. The world number one began proceedings with a double fault and that set the tone for a lacklustre set as Federer struggled to find either his rhythm or his range. Verdasco, in contrast, was a picture of calm, the sometimes erratic left-hander serving impressively and putting Federer in trouble with his big forehand.
The Australian Open semi-finalist saw two more break points go begging in the seventh game but that did not come back to haunt him as he comfortably served out the set.
Predictably, Federer improved at the start of the second set, the Swiss attempting to rush Verdasco by coming to the net.

But the world number eight would not be intimidated and made the passing shots when he needed to keep pace with his opponent - fighting back from 0-30 in game eight. The lively crowd appreciated the high-quality fare, the errors of the opening set forgotten, and at 5-5 it was Federer's turn to feel the pressure but the 28-year-old survived after two deuces. And he capitalised on that escape fully in the next game, creating his first two break points of the match - set points, of course - and then levelling proceedings with a crisp smash. Verdasco must have feared he had missed his chance and he found himself facing break points in the second game of the decider. He saved two but on the third a backhand drifted wide. Suddenly errors were flowing freely from the Spaniard's racquet and the match was all over when another break gave Federer a 4-0 lead.

Jenson Button Ready For The Good Fight

Button signed for the McLaren team earlier this week, ending a long relationship with Brawn GP, with whom he won his first driver's title this year.
He said: "Moving to McLaren is the buzz I need, fighting against Lewis. "Winning the world championship was my aim and I've achieved that, I want to go out there and have fun and fight against Lewis. "I hope that when we go out head to head I come out on top but I don't know that, nobody knows that, that's why it's a proper challenge."
He said 2008 champion Hamilton would have an advantage because of his long-term involvement with the team but added: "I'm going to work very hard over this winter so I feel comfortable when we come to the first race." On Friday, Button, 29, met fans and signed copies of his new book, race diary My Championship Year, at Waterstone's in Bristol. He said it was fitting the foreword to the book was written by Brawn team boss Ross Brawn, despite the recent announcement, adding: "We've been through a lot together, you can't forget what we've achieved.
"We spent a lot of time together, I've been with them for seven years. "I respect Ross a lot and I think he understands my decision. For me, 2010 is all about challenges, I came into Forumla one to win the world championship and that's what I did in my 10th season. "After I did achieve that I thought 'so now I've achieved this what's in store for me? What's the best option?'
"I personally think fighting with Lewis at McLaren is a challenge and a half but I'm willing to take it." He added: "The Brawn GP team have given me something I always wanted in this sport and I've given them something in return - the world championship.

Star Might Glow Once Again

World champion Button joined Lewis Hamilton at McLaren earlier this week after the Brawn team with which he won the drivers' title was renamed Mercedes.
Speculation has mounted that seven-time champion Schumacher, who could not replace the injured Felipe Massa on a short-term deal at Ferrari last season because of a back injury picked up racing motorcycles, could be drafted into the team run by former Benetton and Ferrari colleague Ross Brawn.
Jordan, who ran an F1 team under his own name, said: "I believe the Brawn team will have Michael Schumacher in it next year.
"And my reasons for believing that is that at Abu Dhabi, the grand prix, the last race Dr (Dieter) Zetsche - (chairman of the Daimler board) - Ross Brawn and Michael Schumacher were deep in conversation and I believe it was to do with possibly joining the team as driver for the 2010 championship," Jordan told Radio Five Live.

Bad Day For Ireland

The FAI said the integrity of the game has been damaged after French forward Thierry Henry blatantly handled the ball during extra time in the lead-up to the winning goal scored by William Gallas. "The handball was recognised by the FIFA commissioner, the referee observer and the match officials, as well as by the player himself,'' the FAI said. Ireland's Justice Minister Dermot Ahern and assistant Republic of Ireland coach Liam Brady have both called for the game to replayed.
The FAI said there was precedent for the result to be struck out.
FIFA ordered Uzbekistan to replay Bahrain in a play-off for the 2006 World Cup in Germany after the referee made a mistake after a penalty had been awarded. The governing body described it as a "technical error".
However, in that instance, the referee was guilty of wrongly applying the rules rather than missing an offence. An indirect free-kick was awarded against Uzbekistan when one of their players encroached on the Bahrain penalty area as the Uzbeks successfully converted a penalty. The correct interpretation would have been to order the penalty to be retaken.
"The Football Association of Ireland is hoping that FIFA and its disciplinary committee will, on behalf of football fans worldwide, act in a similar fashion so that the standards of fair play and integrity can be protected," the FAI said. Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni wants FIFA to explain their choice of referee for the game.
Trapattoni told a press conference in Dublin today: "All fans saw what happened on the pitch. "I would only like to say I would like FIFA to explain how they selected the referee for this important game. For this important game we needed a stronger referee - an important referee." The Italian continued: "I would give the advice to FIFA - maybe in the future change the rules about the play-off. Play two games and at the end of 90 minutes - no extra-time.
"I think there are mistakes in life...I've seen many situations in football but change the rules. All sports lose credibility with this situation - it affects the integrity of the game. "I will go to FIFA and advise them 'go straight to penalties'. It's better for football. Trapattoni admitted it had been a "bitter" experience and for him the circumstances of the play-offs were questionable.
He added: "For me it's bitter. There are many questions - they changed the rules about the seeded teams, then us playing away last. "There are many doubts that have to be eliminated. "Out of the non-seeded teams we were the only ones to play the second game away - why?" The Italian believes there was no prospect of the match being replayed, adding: "I know its impossible to replay the game.
"This situation has to give a chance to who is responsible to rethink. It can be repeated in the future and we have to stop it. "There is a 30-second stop and we clarify the situation. I'm sure in the future they will have to do something about it." Trapattoni did though absolve Henry, saying: "It wasn't up to Henry to say I touched it with my hand."
The FAI hit out at the referee, Swedish firefighter Martin Hansson, who failed to spot Henry use an arm to control the ball before squaring for team-mate William Gallas to score. "Conclusive video evidence of a deliberate hand ball by Thierry Henry, which led to France's additional time goal, has been seen by millions of football fans worldwide," the FAI said. "The blatantly incorrect decision by the referee to award the goal has damaged the integrity of the sport and we now call on Fifa, as the world governing body for our sport, to organise for this match to be replayed."
FIFA say they have yet to receive an official request from the FAI. The world governing did say however the referee's decision is final and they would not comment on decisions taken by match officials. A FIFA statement said: "Law 5 of the Laws of the Game state that: The decisions of the referee regarding facts connected with play, including whether or not a goal is scored and the result of the match, are final. The referee may only change a decision on realising that it is incorrect or, at his discretion, on the advice of an assistant referee or the fourth official, provided that he has not restarted play or terminated the match."

Vidic Ready For The Attack

The centre-half has started just seven games for United this term, and has been sidelined for the past three weeks with a calf injury. But manager Sir Alex Ferguson discussed Vidic's fitness with Serbia coach Raddy Antic on Tuesday night and the 28-year-old was given the green light to play 70 minutes in Wednesday afternoon's World Cup warm-up against South Korea at Craven Cottage.
Vidic's return will provide Ferguson with a huge boost as defensive partner Rio Ferdinand is still missing with a back problem, while the Red Devils have slipped five points behind leaders Chelsea. Vidic enjoyed a relative stroll as Serbia ran out comfortable winners against the Koreans, with giant Valencia forward Nikola Zigic's sixth-minute strike securing a 1-0 win.
United midfielder Park Ji-Sung, who has been out since October with a knee injury, captained South Korea and also lasted 70 minutes.

H1N1 Warning For Hajj

For many Muslims it's the journey of a lifetime: making the Hajj pilgrimage. Almost 3 million faithful, together, in the city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. But this year, the Hajj could become an incubator for the H1N1 virus. At a Muslim community center in Duluth, Georgia, American Muslims pray and prepare for the Hajj. Lateefa Khan is here with her husband, Zakerullah. She has mixed emotions. They are leaving their children behind but say they look forward to the worship.
"It is very exciting. An amazing experience," Khan says. "I am looking forward to worshipping, focusing all my time on worshipping." Khan will take precautions to avoid H1N1, also known as swine flu, at the Hajj. They'll carry hand sanitizer and will be "frequently washing our hands, trying to stay as clean as possible." The Khans, along with a number of people at the center who are going on the Hajj, also are getting H1N1 inoculations.
Dr. Asif Saberi gives them a short lecture on how to prepare and encourages everyone to have their shots at least seven days before traveling. He says the Saudi government is doing a lot to protect pilgrims, but "the magnitude of the problem is the magnitude of the numbers of people who attend the Hajj." When it comes to using hand sanitizer and wearing masks, Saberi says he encounters confusion about religious dictates and flu prevention. According to Muslim beliefs, for example, men in a state of pilgrimage should not wear any stitched items or touch alcohol. So what about wearing face masks or using alcohol-based sanitizers?

"One of the basic principles on which shariah (Islamic law) is based is the protection of the health," he says. "So if protection of the health is of such paramount importance, then the ritualistic significance of not wearing stitched clothes on your body is subservient to the need to maintain good health. And therefore wearing a mask is important. Using the sanitizer, which prevents this disease from spreading to others, is important." Saudi Arabia has been preparing for the influx of millions of pilgrims. It won't turn away anyone who wants to come to the Hajj, but it is urging other countries not to let children younger than 12, people older than 65 or pregnant women make the pilgrimage.

Arsenal Shows Interest On Inler

Premier League title contenders Arsenal were among the clubs keen on signing the 25-year-old central midfielder in the summer. "Inler is a great player and it's logical that many clubs are interested in him," said Udinese general director Sergio Gasparin to Radio Kiss Kiss.
"Gokhan is also an exceptional person. "Our position is that of giving continuity to our technical project, hence, we do not want to enter talks to discuss Inler's eventual departure." Inler, who is under contract until June 2012, has made 11 league appearances for Udinese this season.

They Are Billionaires

Guy Laliberté has taken his act on the road. On Sept. 30, the billionaire founder of psychedelic entertainment group Cirque du Soleil blasted into space aboard a Russian rocket. Cost of the ride: $35 million.

His trip, organized through American exploration outfit Space Adventures, lasted 12 days, including a nine-day stay at the International Space Station. Laliberté used part of his time in orbit to promote his clean water charity One Drop, and the rest garnering international media attention,
Nine days into his trip, the marketing master, who turned a gang of Quebec street performers into a live entertainment powerhouse and amassed a $2.5 billion fortune in the process, put on a two-hour Web show featuring him in space and celebrities Bono, Salma Hayek, Shakira and Al Gore on Earth. He returned to solid ground this week. (For more on Laliberté, see "Billionaire Acrobatics.")

Bored with the ordinary hobbies of everyday life, billionaires have embarked on adventures and extreme endeavors only a tycoon can afford. They craft million dollar boats for a single race, journey thousands of miles in hot air balloons to set world records and develop rockets to create their own space agencies.

To prepare for his space mission, Laliberté spent five months in Russia's Star City practicing simulations, learning Russian and undergoing intense cardiovascular training to get in space shape. He also studied how to read and work instruments on the shuttle and space station; although he had no official duties during the mission, he needed to be able to lend a hand to Russian cosmonauts in case of an emergency.

Virgin billionaire Richard Branson is creating his own private space agency. His nascent commercial orbital travel company, Virgin Galactic, will start carrying passengers out of Earth's atmosphere for $200,000 per ticket in 2011. Total flight time: 2.5 hours.

Branson has broken records on the sea and in the air. In 1986 his motorboat "Virgin Atlantic Challenger II" broke the speed record for crossing the Atlantic Ocean in three days, eight hours and 31 minutes. A year later he became the first person to cross the Atlantic in a hot air balloon. He was the first to balloon across the Pacific Ocean in 1991. He failed in his quest to be the first to circumnavigate the globe by balloon when Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones completed the journey in 1999.
